What Is Meningococcal
Disease?
· Meningococcal
(pronounced
ME-NING-GO-KOK-AL) disease is a serious bacterial infection
that can cause meningitis—a dangerous
inflammation of the membranes around
the brain and spinal cord. It can
also lead to sepsis—a potentially
life-threatening blood infection.
Meningococcal disease may affect anyone, but
it occurs most often in young children
and adolescents.
Why Is Your Child’s
Doctor Involved?
• Our office is
participating in a clinical research study to
evaluate an
investigational
meningitis vaccine for the pediatric
immunization series
• Your participation may
contribute
to the development of a
vaccine with
the potential to
prevent meningitis,
a serious childhood
disease
What Can You Expect
After
Your Child Is
Enrolled?
• This research study
includes office
visits for your child,
with a telephone
call between visits.
Most of the office
visits happen at the
same time as
the usual “well-child”
visits that all
children should have
for checkups
