What Is Meningococcal Disease?

·          Meningococcal (pronounced

ME-NING-GO-KOK-AL) disease is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis—a dangerous inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord. It can also lead to sepsis—a potentially life-threatening blood infection. Meningococcal disease may affect anyone, but it occurs most often in young children and adolescents.
